People use Latin because it got everywhere, most Eurpean languages have some elements of Latin in them.
And I go for Siegfried Sasoon's famous line, I just like it and think it's apropriate given our crew complement.

It seems you are correct, I remember reading it first in Sasoon's poem, so I tend to think he came up with it first.
