Shoud Starfleet return to the Delta Quadrant?

Post by Mark »

In the Voyager novel Full Circle, Starfleet sends Voyager back to the DQ with a small fleet, using slipstream drives.

This got me thinking. Assume for a moment that, in THIS timeline, shortly after the destruction of Romulus, Starfleet perfects the slipstream drive, and can now cross VAST distances of space quickly. Should they return to the DQ at that point, and pick up exploration where Voyager left off? Even with the Borg, there are VAST unexplored territories to discover and would seem ripe for exploration, but then so are the outer reaches of both the Alpha and Beta Quadrants as well, and at least they still have logistical support there (starbases and such). Also, you run the risk of pissing off the Borg again, and that never turns out well either.

Should Starfleet return to the Delta Quadrant right away or finish exploring our neck of the woods first?

Might as well go back to check up on some of the more aggressive races they met (The Krenim, the Devore, Malon, Hirogen, etc).

Yes they should return to the Delta to explore the rest of the damn place. For exploring our neck of the woods, Starfleet has the Luna class to handle the exploration of not-so local space.
There is not a problem in this world that can't be solved without the proper application of a sufficient number of thermonuclear ordnance.

Personally, I could see sending SOME missions into the DQ, I don't know that I'd make a mass push there. The DQ missions would be EXACTLY what the Galaxy Class was designed for. Operating for extended periods away from support facilities for exploration.

The newer classes from the relaunch books wouldn't necessarily be available, as I'm basing this in the purely cannon universe (just citing the books as inspiration for the idea)

I agree. I think the DQ would make a good target for exploration because of the Voyager crew's experience, but I think that the main focus should be on colonization and first contact in the outer Alpha and Beta Quadrants, where the logistical support would be greater.

Right. I'd be for sending some token escorted research missions, but there's still plenty of stuff in the A/BQ's on which to focus the majority of Starfleet's time.

Maybe a few research/diplomatic missions, but I wouldn't be going full-out on it.

Are we talking post-Destiny Trilogy? Because sending those highly valuable ships into the DQ after the Borg Attacks was incredibly bullshitty of Nan Bacco to do. "While our infrastructure teeters on collapse... let's waste ships by sending them on exploration missions!"

I'm seeing a pattern here:

I think sending a few small task forces into the DQ for some sidebar exploration, and possable recruiting among the more amiable species Voyager ran into (not that there were many we saw) but focus the main effort of expansion on the A/BQs
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Aye.

And by the way, I'm not sure how you do things in Hawaii but where I come from "should" is spelled with an "L" ;-) [/grammar nazi]

In Hawaiian "L" is one of the most common letters used, so it gets a state holiday every so often.

:worried:

Destiny is still non cannon...........just in the known cannon universe. After the destruction of Romulus leading to the new movie.

Ah, my bad. Well, no Borg Slaughter and near-annihilation.... yes. It would be a good idea to eventually return.

I still wanna rip Bacco a new one for esnding that task force out post-DT... :madashell: :bangwall:

I'd say that they should wait a while, like a century for the locals memories of Voyager to fade. Remember that ep where the race of the week basically told Janeway that "everyone says you guys are cursed/incredible douchebags"?

Wait for the local memories to become legends and instead send unmarked probes into the area, chiefly to recce the status of the Borg. No purpose sending a manned mission that's just going to get turned into zombies.
