Birth of the Federation

Post by McAvoy »

I just bought a new copy of Birth of the Federation. My last one got lost in car accident (in the middle of a move, no less) so I haven't played the game in about three years.

Are there any good mods out there for it?

I wanted to check it out when it first came out, but alas, had no money for it. I'm sure by now there are some cool fan additions, though.

There was one that tried to radically update the graphics and the engine for it, bring it in line with BC. But I havent seen any activity from it.

I heard of that too, but I think that was seperate from the actual 'real' game.

I have seen models to replace a few. I have no clue how to mod the game like that. I mean all I want to do is put in a few ships like maybe the Constitution, Excelsior, Akira, Nova classes. Maybe replace the crap model of the Miranda with something different, a less green Defiant and so forth. Something a little bit better than a Mk. II one the same ship.

If it were possible to change something, I would only change the size of the Galaxy map to maybe 2x it's size. Add more species, and maybe make some species alittle more powerful, so that they're not push overs.

I would increase hull and shield strength so that a battle does not last two turns.

This site seems to have a lot of resources for it.

does anyone else who plays this have a problem with after playing for a while the game slows waaaaay down and you need to exit out and go back in to speed it up? my only problem in the game is the diplomatic A.I its very predictable and at the same time makes moves that make no sense very frustraiting....

Yea I have this problem too, after a while it becomes almost unplayable. Way back years age I thought my computer just sucked but since the problem remains almost 10 years later, its probably a memory leak they never fixed.

It is a real shame about this game though, they did everything right to catch the atmosphere but I wonder if paramount ever considered the stupidity of splitting the license the way they did and how it hurt certain computer games. Having a 4X game in the star trek universe and beeing unable to explore the galaxy with constitutions etc. and basically have to make do with everything you see during TNG is just stupid.
