Re: DITL Species 1- Type of Species
A'ight. Let's see how it turns out in later threads. Now that I've engaged my brain, I've realised it's rather stupid to be complaining when we don't know what it's at all like yet.
"You've all been selected for this mission because you each have a special skill. Professor Hawking, John Leslie, Phil Neville, the Wu-Tang Clan, Usher, the Sugar Puffs Monster and Daniel Day-Lewis! Welcome to Operation MindFuck!"
Re: DITL Species 1- Type of Species
Yeah, it took me till now to realize we haven't even gotten past type of being.
Oh well, at least we had fun... well I did.

I voted lizard, though I'd be cool with an insect or aquatic life form.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

I'm a fun guy. Reason I voted for the fungiRochey wrote:Aye, arguments can always be funl.
How many Minbari does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

I just realized I was arguing for no reason. My vote was for the fungal portion.

Re: DITL Species 1- Type of Species
Rochey - excellent point about the environmental pressures on the intelligence of predators vs. prey. However, carrion creatures/scavengers tend to develop along much the same lines - caracara falcons show much the same intelligence as kestrels, for example. If we are already positing the idea of a highly mobile fungus, why wouldn't environemental pressures to "feed" (I know it's not the proper term for a fungus) engender the same advancement as Earth has engendered in the turkey vulture or Egyptian vulture?
As to form, I was thinking of something like Lovecraft's Elder Things, although perhaps without the wings (which Elder Things are already described as being at least partly fungal-like.)

Re: DITL Species 1- Type of Species
Aye, fungal creatures would make greater sense than plant creatures, given that the ability to migrate to new food sources would come in handy.
From that, sensory organs could develop, along with some way of communicating with other members of its species, to start a sort of mass-migration towards the new food source. Also, it would make more sense for a fungus to move at speed than a plant.
I suppsoe the next thread should be whether we're going for a plant or fungus.
And yeah, the Elder Things are pretty....interesting.

I was going to divide the option on how they gather nutrients. Through decay, photosynthesis, consuming, and what not. And if decaying won then they'd be a fungi.Rochey wrote:Aye, fungal creatures would make greater sense than plant creatures, given that the ability to migrate to new food sources would come in handy.

I think everyone who voted that wants them to be fungal and not plant anyway.
