DITL Species 1- Type of Species

Post by Monroe »

Going to do one thread every week until we have ourselves a species!

Going to be set in the Star Trek universe of course, but hey if its good I don't care if we see it in other universes.

Okay what type of race should it be?

Amphibian-
Lizard-
Mammal-
quartz / Mineral-
Bird-
Insect-
Non-corporeal-
Aquatic-
Artificial-
Fungal / Plant-

*Cybernetic Would not be an option until later. Please vote for what you want the base race to be.

While on Earth things like lizards cannot develop higher brain functions we're going to assume everything is possible with all of these choices (except like a four chambered heart with a plant :P). Later threads we'll go into form of digestion and reproduction.

How many Minbari does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

*ahem* ...quartz. If you're referring to the mineral, anyways.

I'm going aquatic although I could settle for amphibian.

I'm going with insects. Not enough proper insectoid races in Trek.

I say fungus - unless Teaos can come up with an interesting and plausible-sounding way around the "no fire vs. technology" bit. If he can, them I'm down for aquatic.

Something about an ambulatory mushroom disturbs me

Anyway, I can see aquatic.........with some kind of symbiotic relationship to living, self mallable corral which provides underwater "tech"

For the whole tech advancement of aquatic species you can go at it from two ways.

One is that they did it themselves slowly and with great effort, there would be ways around it but it would be very hard. Geothermal heat as a substitute for fire early on in development. Then when they reach a stage of even basic civilisation they can start building stuructures above the water line.

Or you can just cheat and say the species was sapiet but hadnt hardnessed any but pretty basic tech such as building structures and farming. Then a species comes along and gives them tech and helps them out for some reason.

Then they aren't aquatic. They're amphibious.

aâ‹…quatâ‹…ic
/əˈkwætɪk, əˈkwɒt-/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [uh-kwat-ik, uh-kwot-] Show IPA Pronunciation
-adjective
1. of, in, or pertaining to water.
2. living or growing in water: aquatic plant life.
3. taking place or practiced on or in water: aquatic sports.
-noun
4. an aquatic plant or animal.
5. aquatics, sports practiced on or in water.

amâ‹…phibâ‹…iâ‹…ous
/æmˈfɪbiəs/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [am-fib-ee-uhs] Show IPA Pronunciation
-adjective
1. living or able to live both on land and in water; belonging to both land and water.
2. Also, amphibian. capable of operating on both land and water: amphibious vehicles.
3. of or pertaining to military operations by both land and naval forces against the same object, esp. to a military attack by troops landed by naval ships.
4. trained or organized to fight, or fighting, on both land and sea: amphibious troops.
5. combining two qualities, kinds, traits, etc.; of or having a mixed or twofold nature.

The only way a truly aquatic species could ever get into space is if some other race came along, found they were sapient and went through the massive trouble of teaching them all about the various things they'd need to know to advance their own civilisation. That could take centuries.
As an example as to the type of difficulty this would entail, imagine going back to Ancient Rome and trying to get them to land a man on the moon.

I said build things just above sea level not live above it. Aquatic means they live under water and need to be in water to live.

I can swim in water and even dive under it for short periods of time, am I amphibian?
