me,myself and I wrote:I believe the French crossbowman held them up going into battle with the British to show that they still had their middle fingers which were required to fire the crossbow. Apparently the English cut off the middle fingers of the crossbowmen so when/if they were returned to the French they would no longer be able to fire. I forget where I heard it (Mail Call maybe?), so it may be apocryphal.
That sounds suspiciously like the story of how the V-sign came about, so I suspect it's a corruption of that. The single-finger gesture more likely originated as a non-verbal version of "up yours".

You mean before, or after the USA were founded? :poke:
Which kind?
All the kind that smell like feet, but taste good.
I'm not saying they invented them all, I'm saying they're good at making them...
But, in particular, Camembert, Emmental, Mamirolle, Bleu cheese, etc...

Both before and since.
And wasn't this thread about the Defiant????
Yes.

To me, the Defiant is the perfect ship for system defense. Small, fast and powerful. Plus its cheaper then a cruiser or battle cruiser.

actually, this thread was created by me so I could discuss where the one Type X Phaser array on the defiant was before going into battle w/ Tsuki and his Norexean.

You've got the story the wrong way round though. :P It was the English under Henry V who were using longbows, and the French who were (supposedly) cutting their middle fingers off. But the story is most definitely apocryphal.

For added fun, some people also suggest that that incident was the origin of the English phrase "fuck you": not only were the longbowmen waving their middle fingers, they were also yelling, "We can still pluck yew!"

Reading through I'd say the vast majority. Most of those were colonial wars which are easily won, and even the ones against real powers... there werent many countries that could stand up to France.
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Their armpits (they surrendered too much)...

Rochey,

The French and Indian War is on there twice...and AFAIK that war was before 1776, because it was after that war that britain really started taxing and regulating us which is what pissed us off for the most part and spurred us to rebel
