Well, the run of Stargate: Atlantis as a weekly series may be over, but the third series is now in production.

Stargate: Universe

The news is met with a lot of negativity over at GateWorld. Personally, I'm going to reserve judgment until I see it.

I don't have much hope for this new series, personaly, but I'll give it a go to see what it's like.

The latest from GateWorld:
Stargate Universe is set on board a massive Ancient ship called the Destiny, millions of years older than even the city of Atlantis. The Ancients launched the automated ship millions of years ago to seed Stargates throughout many galaxies, with a second ship planned to follow it up and explore those planets. But they got busy with ascension, and never followed through on the plan.

Earth discovers that the Stargate's mysterious ninth chevron can be utilized to gate directly to the Ancient ship, opening up literally the whole universe to explore. But the team will soon discover that they have no way back to Earth, and must ride the ship on its programmed course.

Here is how SCI-FI describes the show:

After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission. Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny and the crew is unable to control the ship's navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.

I think it sounds kind of interesting.

No doubt. Now I just need to see the last two seasons of Atlantis, and wait for this to show up on broadcast TV. :bangwall:

I think it sounds good so long as they dont find a way back to Earth to quickly.

It just sounds to me like Atlantis 2.0

So long as the Wraith arent in it, it will be better than Atlantis. God I hate the Wraith...

Sounds like Atlantis meets Voyager to me. Any word on who will be in it? Either way it's not like we have many options once SGA and BSG go offline, so I'll give it a go.

I thought Atlantis already met Voyager.

No word yet on the cast. But, we do know who the characters are.

Let's see, several hot girls (no problems there), one of which is the spoiled rich girl, one the poor girl who had to join the air force for lack of better options. One crusty older leader, a social outcast genius jack of all trades, the sexy young soldier boy, and the dark, brooding tough guy. Could you get any more cliches onto one webpage?

Uh, nope.
Well, my expectations for the series just dropped a notch.

It's funny how tv producers think. They want to "appeal to a younger audience." But they assume that doing so means they have to stock their shows with annoying 20-somethings. It sounds like Beverly Hills 90210 in space.

I realize we have no idea what these characters are really going to be like or who's going to play them. I'm just going by the descriptions they posted at Gateworld, and I'm not optimistic. I'm still going to set the dvr, though. What else is there to watch?
