Also, isn't some of the concern over ferry v. sea life about certain animals being possible aumakua or ancestor spirits? I remember there being a big deal over culling the tiger sharks a few years back for the same reason.

Ahh, the misconception is now unearthed. Hawaiian's out here are the decendents of the original island natives, not just us poor shmows who live out here. I'm a haole (pronounced how-lee), which means in today's terms "white-man". I'm watching Nemisis right now and just got to the part where Picard rams the Schimitar.
He doesn't order full impulse, just full thrusters and marks, and he does it to damage te Schimitar as much as possable before it reaches the Federation so even if they die, the ship won't reach earth, in which case ramming would be an acceptable tactic. And once Picard rams he activates his self-distruct to blow both ships to kingdom come.
