It's also an episode where the Doctor is beaten by his adversary. The entity had won. It defeated the smartest man in the universe. The smartest man in the universe was going to die by the hands of those he protected the most, and an unfathomable evil was going to be unleashed. It was going to be an unspectacular death for a fantastical being, chucked off a train like an unruly passenger.
