They were warp capable, they just used fusion reactors rather than M/AM reactors for power. It doesn't make sense any other way.

I had always thought they were incapable of warp...Fair enough...

To be fair, I hate the Original series more than I hate Voyager. So...I avoid it.

Sir, I admire your guts...and will continue to do so after certain other members here rip them from your body with rusty hooks for daring to say that.

Scotty stated that "their power is simple impulse", which has frequently been misinterpreted as referring to the ship's means of propulsion as well. Given that the Neutral Zone is 2.5 ly wide, this is nonsense.

I told you guys about that fan fic I read last year as a different means of explination right? Some sort of a warp speed BOP "carrier" dropped it off in system.

The big E had to take IT down, as well as the other BOPs it was carrying

From Memory Alpha..."Dialogue from several episodes, including "Where No Man Has Gone Before", and "The Doomsday Machine" suggests that the impulse drive could be used in some manner to propel a ship at faster than light speeds, albeit with a lower maximum speed and a higher rate of fuel consumption than the main warp drive. This could possibly make the relationship between Impulse and Warp Drive analogous to the relationship between electric and combustions engines in a modern hybrid car. It would also explain Scotty's remark in "Balance of Terror" about the Romulans' power being 'simple impulse' and allow it to be reconciled with their clear capacity for interstellar travel."

It doesn't need to be explained that way. Scotty's comment referred to power generation, not method of propulsion.

*EDIT* Now that I'm thinking of it, they obviously used plasma, the way "normal" warp drives do - that was the reactant in the torpedoes they used.

If the Romulan BoP was limited to impulse speed, that whole engagement would have been a walkover for the Enterprise. They'd basically have been dealing with a stationary target, after all.

True, but I just thought I'd throw out something I found... :|

Aye, it's generaly accepted that Scotty was talking about the type of power generation.

I think that BoP was an under rated ship. She gave an damed good accounting of herself against the most powerful ship in the quadrant

I shall admit defeat, and concede on that point then.
