The E-E screen in First Contact WAS a holographic projection. When it wasn't on there was just a blank wall behind it.

But they decided they didn't like the way it made the bridge look so they put a normal viewscreen in for Insurrection and Nemesis.

*ahem* Anyway...

I think it's safe to assume that in the late 24th century, holographic projection technology wouldn't be any more arcane or maintenance-intensive than a CRT to us. So why wasn't it's use more widespread - and why would the E-E go back to a flat-screen monitor?

Really? They're available for use to replace a friggin' Hummel figurine in Riker's quarters, but they're too energy-inefficient to replace a TV on the bridge?

Maybe Picard didn't like it. Didn't he order his entire replicator system pulled and an older on re-installed? Maybe he did the same with the viewscreen.
