The USMC cannot retreat, surrender or NOT engage with the enemy so long as ANY US citizen is in danger. The final act of the USMC is to retire the units flag. This is part of the reason that Marines are trained the way they are. They have to not only be able and willing but ready to pay any price for even the most minor detail.

Okay, this is probably a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway.
If the main problem is the Marines' lack of numbers, then why don't they just start training the regular Army guys in a similar way? Then that way they can have better quality troops with higher numbers, right?

Cost of extra time. A Marine costs at least twice as much to train due too needing warships. Drop out rates and losses in training and in the field. Proper mindset and willingness to follow through on the missions that Marines will be used for.

Not exactly better, better training certainly. Their gear is naturally more orientated towards amphib assault but they are actually funded by the Navy so they have often lagged behind the Army in kit. They used the M-60 after it had been phased out in the Army and continued to use the M-60 tank for a good deal longer as well.
On a light note a retired USAF friend of mine told me that Marine stands for My Ass Rides In Navy Equipment.

My roommate is an ex-marine and I'm ex-army

My BCT was eight weeks long.........his was 16.

My AIT was an additional eight weeks long..........his was an extra 16.

And we had similar jobs.

Any questions?

In addition, there is a definite role for the "regular" army - there really isn't a need to spend that extra money and resources training the entire US Army to be the USMC writ large.

Besides, those devil dogs like being able to call themselves an exclusive group.

the USMC motto is
"The Few, the Proud"

can't be "The Few..." if the whole army is trained as marines.
