Yes you can. You can also shoot at helicopters, which is why no army would ever use them to transport troops into action... Oh. Wait.

Plus all those shuttles have their own transporters that can be used.

Touche. But this is also starfleet, I doubt they'd take the risk.

Since when? AFAIK the only shuttles we've seen w/ definite transporters are the Runabouts (and/or delta flyer) and we don't know the E-E carries any.

They were seen in action in BoBW II, and mentioned in Insurrection

This being Starfleet they were too stupid to even think of it - we're discussing the thousand-and-one things that should have been done.

Then the transporters in the cargo bays run on seperate units, so they shouldn't have been fried.
Then the Captain's Yacht would presumably have one.

Dude, come on. You'll spend far less time thinking of ways that Data's death wasn't cheap and stupid.

Would have been better if he'd just stepped in front of a phaser blast meant for the Captain.

Doesn't alleviate Picard's idiocy of going alone but at least when Data dies it has a point.

Assume Picard actually didn't have an ego as big as his bald spot, and actually TOOK a security team with him. The firefight ensures, and Picard and Data break away from the team to disable the weapon. Data tries but can't because it's security coded to Shinzon's DNA thus Picard has to do it. A tense moment or two ensues as Data covers Picard. Picard succeeds, and Shinzon goes berserk and breaks the line. Data and Picard are trying to get back to the team as Shinzon overtakes them and tries to shoot Picard. Data reacts with superhuman speed and steps in front of Picard to take the hit, giving Picard time to shoot back, disarming Shinzon but depleting the last of the power in his phaser. Hand to hand erupts with Picard victorious since Shinzon is falling apart, and goes to Data, just in time to hear his last words, before having the android "die" in his arms.

My way is better, huh?

Data doesn't breathe, remember.

I'm wondering how Brent Spiner was able to breathe in space, though...
