Which ship could become the backbone of the Modern Starfleet
Re: Which ship could become the backbone of the Modern Starfleet
Wait, I'm hazy on this.......we know for sure how long it took them to upgrade Lakota?

A safe bet would be from the first time Layton brought Benteen into the picture to the battle. Whenever you try to run any program under the radar you need to have a trusted person in place from the get go. Changing people out to late in the game is risky even on a good day.

Sorry, should have stated that as a theory.Mark wrote:Wait, I'm hazy on this.......we know for sure how long it took them to upgrade Lakota?

Ahh.......so Lakota COULD have sat in drydock for say six months minimum getting stripped and retrofitted. To tell you the truth, even if they took a year, they just DRAMATICALLY increased the usefulness of an aged design, and extended it's lifespan. Not a bad idea for using resources, actually.

I was thinking that the upgrades to the Nebula class shouldn't take over a month. The new pods just get hitched on. The two type XIIs are the only change out. That month given the size of the crew of the Neb should be a pretty relaxed pace.

Let's see..........to upgrade those two strips you'd have to;
Strip out all of the old emitters, housings, power distributors, and whatever other supporting equipment.
Modify the interior of the ship to create room for all of the new gear.
Install all of the new equipment, taking the time to make sure all of the new stuff is compatible with the old stuff, then integrate it into the system. Remember, as far as we know the Nebula class still uses isolinier chips. We've only seen type XII phasers on ships equipped with bio neural gelpacks, so the circuitry and processing requirements could pose a challenge.
Refit or replace the power generation and distribution systems to allow for the greater power requirements of the new equipment. Both warp and impulse.
Modify the SIF, inertial dampeners, and thrusters to account for the increased mass.
Can anybody else thing of anything?
A better option may be to install some pulse cannons into the pod as well. The pod could LIKELY house it's own power supply as well.

All of that is still a far far far smaller refit then what was committed to the Lakota.
As to the pods. I'd rather QTLs and maybe a type X or two for added support rather then worry about pulse phasers.

I wonder how many pulse phasers one could fit on a Nebula pod?

I'd guess between 6 and 8. But then you'd have to be facing the target for them to work. Not a great idea for a ship that isn't based around combat.

Although, there is this. The Neb can be rather maneuverable.

But that requires you to charge the enemy. That is fine for a small and fast ship with uber armor or a Sov with uber shields. The Neb isn't these... it's a JoAT ship. It needs to be able to fight just as well running as charging. This can't be done with pulse phasers.

Re: Which ship could become the backbone of the Modern Starfleet
Again, true.
If the pod had two QT launchers and 4 pulse phasers though, it'd be like having a Defiant strapped on the top. Which would be a drastic increase in combat power.
I suppose it would depend whether the pulse phasers could be mounted in turret form.

Re: Which ship could become the backbone of the Modern Starfleet
You 'could' do that or you 'could' replace the pod with a newer one. One that mounts a pair of forward and aft facing QTLs supported by a pair of type X phasers. 360* fire (phasers) supported by long range (QTLs) fire.

I don't see why phasers couldn't be placed on the pods.
Maybe DS9 just hooked me on pulse phasers; they always seemed more powerful than standard types.
Also, watching how much damage they seemed to do against the Cube in FC really sold me on them.

Most of the standard phasers in DS9 were from runabouts where the pulse phasers were from the Defiant.Maybe DS9 just hooked me on pulse phasers; they always seemed more powerful than standard types.
I noticed those pulse phasers did less damage then the E-E's PTs. I doubt they are that strong. Also, watching how much damage they seemed to do against the Cube in FC really sold me on them.
