The way I understood it was that this movie was actually supposed to be an adaptation of Richard Kluger's book 'The Sheriff of Nottingham'. the story is told from the perspective and thus paints a picture of the sheriff as a average guy trying to hold his own in a kinda crappy job while raising a family. He has to deal with King John at some point who forces him to make a painful decision. Robin Hood comes into play as a two bit jerk. Anyway, what was supposed to be an adaptation of this book evolved into what just hit the screen - for better or worse.
