As far as I know, the current leading theory is that the xenomorphs were some sort of biological terror weapon created by the race that owned the ship that was seen crashed at the start of Alien. Which would explain why they happened to be carrying a fuckload of eggs from a highly dangerous race.
It would also to some extent explain their fucked up reproductive system. If they were designed to have their eggs dropped into a crowded city full of civilians with nothing more than the local police department to stop them, they might do quite well, particularly if they were designed as a terror weapon. Their reproductive system would also ensure that they'd never overpopulate and become a problem for their creators.
As for how the aliens grow so quickly, I believe the novelisation of Alien states that the creature got into one of the ship's grain siloes, and ate a load of stuff in there. Aliens is easily explained, since they had plenty of time and presumably access to the colonists' food supplies. In Alien 3 the creature was born more or less fully formed already, and presumably could have gotten food from the prison's slaughterhouse if necessary. In Alien: Ressurection, they were probably being fed by the scientists experimenting on them.
