That's true, but could you expect something better from Star Trek writers?

Some of it is awesome, some of it... I could write better while on the crapper. Take Voyager's Threshold as a good example of that. I'd be embarassed if something like that had somehow appeared on my word processor.

Threshold is the worst case of continutiy contradiction ever,

Considering that Braga himself said it was crap, that goes to show just how bad it was....

Brage didn't like it? Maybe it has some merit that I missed, then...

That's more an indication that even Bragga isn't completely lacking in sanity than an indication of any redeeming value in Threshold. If you can stand being reminded of the details of its stupidity have a look at this. A good read, and a look at the small bits of stupidity that you might have missed amid the more glaring examples.

I tried. And, no - I couldn't stand being reminded of it.

Then next Startrek book should talk about the Defensive systems of Sol.

The Motion Picture novelisation apparently mentioned Earth's orbital defences in detail (albeit they were deactivated by V'Ger). Unfortunately ever other series has also shown us the extent of those defences - a lot of crossed fingers.

Something destroyed the Breen fleet pretty good. They only got a few shots off.

Well I never heard of a home fleet at the time so what does that leave us? And why didn't they build those kinds of defenses around every world?

Deep, are you insinuating that Starfleet should have been acting inteligently? You should know better than that by now. :P

On topic, I haven't seen that episode in ages. Did they ever mention what destroyed the fleet?

For all we know most planets may have defences. We have never really seen a planet attacked.

The main one that springs to mind would be the Tal Shiar/Obsidian Order fleet attacking the Founders homeworld, but that was left undefended as a trap. I've often wondered since then whats to stop a cloaked fleet attacking Earth in the same way. 30 Ships isn't much to sacrifice in exchange for destroying 2/3rds of a planet. Even if each ship only got off one volley of torpedoes, the effects would be devastating.

Yeah, the only thing I recall specifically was the deactivated satellites from TMP.
