In space you don't need to, hold things up. Considering how quick and easy transporting us, why bother putting in a system on a battle cruiser that is going to take away from its primary design.

No argument, but that wasn't the question proposed.

I was talking about the hotel idea.

Just build the hotel underground. Then you don't need to worry about how it holds up. Just dig an Enterprise-shaped hole and put it in there and let the ground hold it up. Use big LCD screens for the windows.

Kinda defeats the purpose of the Enterprise on land as a hotel.

How so? You do it so you can walk around inside the Enterprise.

True but seeing the ship from the outside would be part of the fun too.

I've wondered myself how a Star Trek ship could hold its balance when landed, but I figure there are anti-gravity and other devices employed to make it happen.

Anyhow, in this vein, I tried to put the size of a landed ship (I went with the Galaxy class) into perspective. For this purpose I made a collage of a GCS landed in Central Park in New York. I think it does look rather small because the park is so large itself, but in comparison to the buildings, the ship's size is impressive (you can click the image for higher resolution).

Cerey cool, But I doubt there is active systems in use on landing, it seems to be used in emergencies when such systems would be down.

There must be some active systems. The E-D survived an uncontrolled descent with no fatalities. Even if the ship is tough enough to survive that without SIF (which I doubt), there's no way the crew would without some serious inertial damping.

That's pretty cool! How did you match up the perspective? Just look for pics that matched?

Actually I like that. The show never really gave it the impression of how large the ship really is.
