Fair points. As I said, since I don't have the DVD's, it's been a
long time.

Leave your fighters to hold up theirs and head home. Don't make it in time, you lose the war. Lose against the Basestar(s), you lose the war. Win, you gain time for evacuation and save a larger portion of humanity.
It's not exactly a difficult choice.
Again a fair point, but it doesn't speak to what I was saying. Mark simply asked if Galactica had given up the fighter battle and returned to Caprica, would it have changed the outcome - I answered no. I remain of that opinion, no matter the moral rectitude of such an action.

Thanks a ton. I sort of took it for granted that Mark meant "earlier than she did." I don't know if he's on any painkillers - or if he'd even take them if given - but I highly doubt he intended to ask, "What would have happened if things had occurred exactly as they did?"

No...what Mark asked was, "If she stayed, could Galactica have tipped the balance of the Battle of Cimtar." There were both Battlestars and Vipers engaged against that fleet of Raiders.
By staying, she would have provided a bit more firepower against the Raiders, as well as providing one more target to divide the Cylons attack force, as well as Adama's experience, and the fact she was the only Battlestar on alert, and thus totally unprepaired.
