Long before the Play Station 2 came out there was the IBM PS2, the second generation PC (a 286 CPU). As for the keybaord:

Just another thought. If it's a PS2 keyboard, have you had the keyboard and mouse unplugged recently. If so you could have connected the mouse to the keyboard and vice versa. If so that can cause a problem like this.

How old was the machine you had Ian that you fried a mobo? I mean yeah, I know that they can be bad, but I generally pull out the ps2 keyboard without problem.

The faster you pull the cable out the higher the current you generate as it disconnects. This machine was an Olivetti PS2 and it was about 15 years ago. It's still in the instructions for every PS2 keyboard I've ever seen. This isn't USB, which was designed to be plugged and unplugged whilst the power is still on. That was never the case with PS2 keyboards, nor mice.

Me neither. That's how I came to blow a motherboard. :)

I don't think it's a PS2 thing. Also, the first time it's been unplugged in about two years was just the other day, after it had stopped working. So I doubt that's the problem.
