You're right it was. I saw an interview. The director lived basically the life that is in the movie. Blacks and other minorities were hurdled into Districts and rights taken away Because of the way that the ethnic groups were divided parents could be separated from their kids and what not. Japanese were the only non-white race allowed to move freely because they were 'honorary whites' (which is such a cool name :P). That's why they wanted it set in South Africa. Its a commentary on the South African society.

None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Could it be that there was some inspiration from this video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 2812358837#

Alive in Joburg, lots of aliens come to joburg/Earth as refugees.

EDIT: this is by Neill Blomkamp, the director. Still nice to show what it looked like in an earlier stage.

That's kind of neat. I didn't know it started as a short. And it has the star from D9 in it too.

Only problem is D9 takes place at least 20 years into the future ;)

In the beginning. They arrive to Earth 20 years before the movie starts.

Yeah, it's an alternate history sort of deal.

Oh. When do they say it's 2003? I got the pression they landed in 2009 and it was 2029.
