Have a read through those links I posted earlier, and look around the Lexicanum. That should give you a pretty good rundown on the universe. If you have any questions then just ask.

Good to hear it, Mark. in the Lexicanum (Rochey's first link,) you can find a timeline, but there's an AWFUL lot of stuff that you might not necessarily need. You can go to the "Category" page, and get overviews of a lot of topics, or just click "Random Page" for a while and follow whatever links sound interesting.

Maybe at one or two points, but this mission is going to mostly feature us undercover. Flying around the system in an Imperial Navy battleship is going to draw some attention (each system is protected by its own small fleet of System Defence Ships [SDS], and so the Navy isn't always based in most systems, thus the appearance of any Navy vessel would draw attention).

One of the reasons the scenario was designed as it is was to give us a change from the other RPGs, in which they all take place primarily on starships. This RPG will feature us trying to blend in amongst a planetary populations, posing a whole range of new challenges and dimensions.

Interesting....That'll make for some interesting plot movements.

I think a Sisters of Silence character (Departmento Investigates) might be interesing.

Ooh, I didn't see that one coming. Nice. :D

You see, there's plenty of stuff about the universe that I don't even know - my experience with WH40k is playing once or twice as a kid - about 500 rulebooks ago - and then getting into the fiction and cruising online resources within the last 6 months.

As to your initial question, I wouldn't mind any particular type of character, as long as it could be rationally written into the "story." Naval personnel would be OK, if it were able to be reasoned - perhaps an IN ship was terror-bombed or Naval personnel were attacked, and a Navy trooper was sent... as Rochey said, Imperial Navy would be stretching it, but a reasonable account could be made for most things. If you wanted a ship's officer or something, that would be a but harder to rationalize.

There's an awful lot of interesting stuff - the 40k universe is actually a very interesting hypothetical sociological study.

Just think what kind of character you'd like to play as (pilot, former military officer, political officer, priest, interogator, soldier, etc. You can pick pretty much anything) and go from there.

Do they have any kind of "rogue" class??? (i.e. the sneaky thief subtype)

Many members of the Ecclesiarchy, as it's called, are rather worldly - think 16th century Catholic priests who owned land, brothels, etc.

You can make any type of profession into the personality you like. You can always be a hive ganger, or some other denizen of one of the monolithic city-sprawls ("hives") that dominate the main population-holding worlds. Of course, you could be an Imperial Guard vet who specializes in infiltration, a member of one of the temples of the Officio Assassinorum (which see) - especially a Vindicare assassin or Deat Cultist (which also see.)
