So it's like an emotionless "Enemy Within?"
I can't stand nothing dull
I got the high gloss luster
I'll massacre your ass as fast
as Bull offed Custer

Funny, I remember the whole war with the Klingons plot really well, but I don't remember two Spocks at *all* in that book.

The only thing I remember from that book is that Spock 1 used logic to conclude that they both should live. Spock 2 used logic to conclude that one of them must die. It was hard to tell the good one from the bad one at first because of the whole emotionless deal.

The Spock that thought one must die... I'd assume he's talking about the other guy.
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

That would be a logical assumption

Star Trek was originally written during the peak of the Cold War. At that time, Truman's idea of Containment was failing , LBJ's "Great Society" was not turning out so great, and the US was not exactly blowing away anyone in the space race. All of this was happenign when the show was first developed in 1964 and aired in 1966. We needed that "Space Cowboy." As a young, charismatic leader who would thumb his nose to the enemy, go around the bureaucracy to get things done, and as Kirk said himself much later on, "make a difference," he was quite the hero. In many ways, he represented the perfect anti-Communist; a passionate, charismatic, and bold man. He fit into the typecast of the hero of the day.

Well said, Bryan!

Kirk is my favorite captain, btw. TOS is also my favorite show for a great many reasons as well.

Some of the reasons why Kirk is so much more awesome than other captains (information gleaned from Ex Astris Scientia):

Number of times Kirk's womanizing qualities help solve a critical situation: 12

Number of times Kirk engages in a brawl and/or has his shirt torn: 25

Number of times Kirk argues a computer to death: 4

So Kirk is able to seduce, fight or debate his way out of any entanglement.

Most of those traita are not things I'd want in a captain.

I don't argue with results. In his wild west universe where he could not call home for directions and wearing a red shirt is a virtual death sentence, Kirk will either seduce, talk or double punch his way out of things. Jim Kirk pimped slapped a god, shot a giant reptile in the chest with a home made cannon and convinced a WMD to blow itself up. He beat up a genetically engineered super soldier with a length of pipe, took on Jack The Ripper, and is so damned charismatic managed to seduce his evil counterpart's mistress. He kicked an Orion ship's ass while bleeding to death. When aliens from the Andromeda galaxy hijacked his ship, Jimmy K's god-like charisma caused the alien chick to come back for more lovin'.

Jim Kirk. Lover, fighter, thinker.

Well said, katefan and Bryan. :) He was also compassionate, a man who remembered his subordinates.
