Can no one here solve my original riddle?
The following was seen on a hardware store window:
Hardware Special
$.25 each
100 for $.75
1000 for $1.00
10,000 for $1.25
What were they selling?

Buying numbers. Each number is $0.25.

Kirk never had one.
Spock had one once, but it wasn't really him.
Scotty got something like it, but never went all the way.
Sulu and Chekov both went without one.
McCoy had one but only for a little while.
Riker had one and kept it for a long time.
Geordie tried to get one a few times, but couldn't keep it.
Data tried it once, but it wasn't for him.
Someone had a fantasy about Picard with one.
Worf has always had one, but it's not very big.
Sisko decided to get one, but it was also very small.
Tuvok had one when he wasn't on Voyager.

What is it?

I think he means to ask "can you explain how each line refers to a beard".

OK: Kirk was clean-shaven.
Mirror Spock had a goattee, but "our" Spock didn't.
Scotty wore a moustache in films/TNG.
Sulu and Chekov were clean-shaven.
McCoy wore a beard in TMP.
Riker famously wore a beard.
Geordie had a bit of fuzz, but that's it.
Data had a beard for a hot minute.
Picard had a beard in the ATG future.
Worf wore a standard Klingon goattee.
Sisko grew a goattee.
The Tuvok thing? IDK... I guess he wore a beard while filling another berth or on an undercover assignment.

Didn't Tuvok have a beard in the DS9 Mirror-verse episodes?

Picard also had a beard in the fake-future Riker experienced in "Future Imperfect", and I think Tuvok had a beard in "Endgame".
