Post by IanKennedy »

Actual news headline.

“UK weather: Snow on the way with yellow warning for large parts of England and Wales“

I wish the would come up with another name for it.

... Yellow? Is that supposed to be evocative of street lights and red, yellow and green?

I'm pretty sure we have Amber, Yellow and Red, although possibly in a different order.

In the US, at least, an Amber Alert is a missing child. Yellow and red alerts are conditions of danger aboard Starfleet starships. ;)

They're weather warnings. They may also be used for terrorism, but I think that's different scale. Here's a guide for weather:

So it goes Yellow, Amber and then Red. That kinda made sense as amber is a mix of yellow and red (ie orange).

As for terrorism, we have threat levels:

Threat levels
There are 5 levels of threat:

low - an attack is highly unlikely
moderate - an attack is possible but not likely
substantial - an attack is likely
severe - an attack is highly likely
critical - an attack is highly likely in the near future

Officially British traffic lights go Green, Amber, Red. There used to be a public information film about not being an "Amber Gambler", in other words only Green means go, everything else means stop.
