He pitched a Trek show to them back a few years ago, but they went with Discovery instead. I guess we can always wonder what he would have done, if he'd had Trek. Orville, but as a Trek show? Or a serious Trek show?

A producer of the caliber of Seth MacFarlane pitches to whoever owns Star Trek, his own Star Trek show he wants to produce, a pop culture figure with connections in the industry, very politically opinionated, and a Star Trek super-fan(!) and they say no to him. They hire Bryan Fuller, fire him midway because they suddenly didn't like what they hired him to do, so then they hire Alex Kurtzman, who worked for JJ Abrams, wrote the new Trek movies, and failed to start the "Dark Universe" franchise with his directorial debut "The Mummy."

Seth MacFarlane goes on to create his own future space exploration show, in the vein of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" tackling issues like LGBT rights, religious zeal, war, the things Star Trek used to be about instead of action/adventure spectacle. And The Orville is a serious show. It's classified as comedy to avoid copyright lawsuits from whoever is Star Trek's parent company. It's nothing like a sitcom.

I wanted "Star Trek with jokes, and easy on the jokes". And that's exactly what Seth delivered. And it's even more clear as it goes along that he only ever put jokes in because he had to - he wants to make Star Trek, and this is as close as he's been able to come.

Further rumours as to where the show is going... again, just rumour, but the previous ones proved accurate, so...

Needless to say, massive spoilers.


The Dahj twins both hold the memories and consciousness of Data. Data's consciousness will "wake up" by the end of the series. The remaining twin will therefore literally become Data.

Bruce Maddox is modelled on (wait for it) Donald Trump. He will spend some time being a mysterious figure, but eventually be revealed as the main antagonist. Maddox, in cooperation with the Tal Shiar, was behind the Synthetics attack on Utopia Planitia.

Episode 9 will reveal that Beverly Crusher has been dead for some time. She and Picard agreed that a relationship would never work, and he has been alone ever since.

Alison Pill's character (the synth scientist we see in ep 1) will be revealed to have been born male.

A character called Rios will sacrifice his life and remain as a hologram. Shades of Red Dwarf!

Elnor, the "Romulan Legolas" will be revealed to be Sela's son. He was sent to murder Picard but changed his mind.

Narek - who we haven't met yet - will be revealed to have been pulling strings along with Maddox, because he's a "Borg sleeper agent", who is assimilated but still looks Romulan.

Episode 10 will feature an appearance by Q. Apparently a very short cameo, but Q will feature in season 2, if there is one.

Hugh is working with the Romulans to reverse engineer Borg tech and rehabilitate former drones on the cube.

Seven of Nine is part of a group called the Fenris Rangers who have been urging the Federation to help rescue drones, without success. The Rangers are essentially Borg freedom fighters, but are branching out to support refugees and others.

The series may confirm the comic backstory for Trek 09, in which the fairly conventional mining vessel Nero operated was upgraded with Borg tech - from the cube, apparently - before being sent back in time. That's why it is so huge and powerful and weird looking.
