I always wonder during these pics how fast does the old plane have to be going to keep in formation with he new one; and how slow is the new one going to maintain formation.

Max speed of a P-38 LIghtning is something like 400 mph. I'd be extremely surprised if any jet fighter couldn't comfortably motor along at 250 or so.

They can. F-14 Tomcat could go as low as 98. Though they were unique for being an overall bad ass plane...

The P-38 is actually my favorite World War II-era plane. :) So that pic's even cooler than before for me.

It's a toss-up between the P-38 and the F4U for me. I think the F4U wins just because of looks.

For me it's pretty much almost any British and American plane's. Some like the P-38 or Hellcat (I have no idea why) I like over others.

The P-38 is a beautiful plane and one of my favorites. But I am always going to have a soft spot for the P-40 Tomahawk. I even have a print of William S. Phillips' Into The Teeth of The Tiger hanging on my wall:

Sadly the jpeg doesn't do the illustration justice.
