Ever thought about adding Science ratings?

Post by sunnyside »

You have your diplomatic grading system, which appears to be based off of speculations. Have you ever considered doing something similar for scientific capacity? Presumably it would factor in things like internal facilities/stations/labs, computational capability, the ships sensors, probe capability, and the ships ability to create or interact with phenominon (navigational deflector effects, emitter arrays). You could then broadly classify the result on a scale similar to how you manage the diplomatic grading system.

It might be useful for games, interesting to new browsers, and presumably you guys are into doing that sort of thing.

That's a cool idea.

It's been suggested before, but just not something I ever got around to doing. Would be just as neat as a Diplomatic rating, I guess.

Maybe break it up into a similar strength rating based on arbitrary guesses for each class. Sensor strength, range, sensitivity etc.

A scientific rating would be pretty easy to do, if a little arbitrary. Doing one based upon the strength system would be far more complex. It took us quite a time to come up with a system that works as it does now.

Though now that you mention it, a strength value makes more sense as capability is going to be going up over time. It would also seem to make sense to separate sensor range and efficacy, which would be relevant even for a pure warship, from Scientific analysis and manipulation, which wouldn't be so much.

That said you might have a lot to already build on. For one thing warp speed is probably a decent proxy for general technological potency and sophistication for a given ship, and those values are often cannon.

From there sensor range and efficacy might be correlated to weapon range and accuracy, and could be modified based on visible sensors and such on the ship, various indications from the series/movies, and plain speculation on what "seems right".

Scientific analysis and manipulation might start from the sensor strength and then modify it heavily based on the nature of the ship (they are often designated warship, science ship, etc), the prominence of various emitters (such as navigational deflectors), comments form the series/movies about the ships, and plain speculation on what "seems right"

Also you could make it simple. No need for semi complex math to add up. Just a percentage that is in relation to a Galaxy. Like 25%, 30%, 20% and 25% for example.

Like for example patrol ships may need sensor range but not the sensitivity to determine what the captain may have had for breakfast. But a science ship may not need the range but labs and sensitivity plus power for more detailed work. Ships like an Explorer may have above average to excellent equipment but not the best.
