No, I think the joke is the idea that the Brits just assumed their position of superiority without regard for details. Further, the whole thing is completely fallacious; there was never a British carrier named HMS Brittania, and the same story circulated about the USS Nimitz and a lighthouse in (IIRC) Halifax.
