1297th Singapore Longshoremen

World of Origin: Singapore

Singapore is a relatively quiet star system in the Segmentum Pacificus, Asiatic Sector. Singapore Primus is a calm quiet bluish white giant of spectral class A1III. Six planets orbit Singapore. Singapore A is a small airless rock tidally locked with the primary. Only a few small research stations and a darkside mining operation are set up on it. Singapore B will be discussed later. Singapore C is an average sized world with a thick atmosphere. With surface pressures reaching 280 psi and temperatures hovering around 310 degrees C the planet is uninhabitable but its mineral wealth had led to the establishment of numerous mining colonies giving the planet a population of a 134 million. Singapore D, E, and F are all gas giants of varying sizes. Only Singapore E had attracted any significant attention for the composition of its atmosphere. Atmospheric stripping operations give the planet a population of 92 million in orbital and floating habitats around the planet. Asteroid belts reside between Singapore C and D as well as between E and F. Both are extensively mined for metals for the traditionally metal poor world of Singapore B.

Singapore B (here after referred to only as Singapore) is a large world for a habitable one with a radius of 9877.3km but with a mass of only 19.114x10^21 tons. Singapore's density is only 80% that of Terra's. Singapore's surface gravity is 92% of Terran norms. The planet's low density is a result of the low concentrations of heavy metals in the planet's mantle. With far fewer radioactive materials in its core Singapore's center is significantly cooler than the norm resulting in little tectonic activity and a corresponding dearth of metals in easily accessible locations. 85% of Singapore is covered in water and a third of the habitable land is locked under the polar ice caps. The 10% of Singapore's surface that is useful land is dispersed in many long willowy land masses and island chains. The slow rate of tectonic activity has limited mountain formation and most land consists of low lying sandy land masses. Singapore's climate is relatively mild and very stable owing to its highly circular orbit with an eccentricity value of only 0.005311 and its low axial tilt of 15.7 degrees. Singapore's tropical region has an average temperature of 29 degrees Celsius with temperate regions averaging 23 degrees. The dominant life forms on land are primarily reptilian, in the oceans reptilian and piscine species vie for dominance. Singapore has an extensive ring system and nine moons.

Singapore itself was first charted and settled sometime in the 21st millenia. Cut off from the remainder of human space during the Age of Strife it was brought back into the fold during the Great Crusade by marines of the Salamander's legion. The rejoining was not marked by bloodshed but rejoicing as local religious leaders had been prophesying the coming of champions from space who'd bring them back into the light. Singapore was reunited with the fledgling Imperium only months prior to the Heresy and the facilitator's the Salamanders brought with them had little time to try and bring the population of Singapore into compliance with the Imperial Truth prior to those dire events. Consequently Singapore was an early adopter of the cult of the Emperor and one of the early churches strongholds.

When it was brought into the Imperium Singapore already had a planetary population of over fifteen billion and they'd taken to a general pattern of living similar to that of hive worlds. Ninety percent of the population lived in roughly twenty main population centers. Since that time the population of Singapore has risen to over a hundred billion concentrated in forty population centers. The hives of Singapore are typically built on shorelines near existing harbors. As the area grows the hive that develops winds up being located as much off shore as on it with extensive growth below the waterline. Unlike many hive worlds Singapore is able to sustain itself through extensive aquaculture. In the interests of maintaining this capability the planetary government has enacted strict rules of pollution in order to maintain Singapore's environment. Consequently even the underhives of Singapore are relatively clean and tidy.

Of particular interest to many are Singapore's floating cities. With so much of the surface covered in water pockets of resources are often located far out at sea. Rather than shuttling workers to and from these areas floating cities were constructed instead. Far smaller than a hive, usually only capable of supporting half a million to two million workers these floating cities resemble icebergs, with only 30 or 40% of their bulk above the water line, usually the hab blocks, with the remainder below. Some of these cities are tethered in position but a few float free, usually to follow things such as fish. These floating cities sparked enough interest that the wealthy Burlio clan decided to construct several small floating cities in the tropics purely as tourist destinations.

Singapore's economy is built upon three main industries, the first is ceramics. Due to Singapore's low metallic content the locals have had to make due with readily available local materials. Over the millenia the craftsmen of Singapore's skill with ceramics has been renowned and Singapore provides high quality ceramic armor plate to two nearby forgeworlds. In addition to this Singapore's vast oceans are home to many exotic forms of wildlife and both the exotic and the mundane are harvested in farms and shipped off world. Finally, the pollution controls enacted by Singapore's government have preserved the natural beauty of what land their is and Singapore is a popular tourist destination of the Sector Asiatic.

Military Overview:

Due to the world's high population and growth rate Singapore is saddled with a high tithe in Guard Regiments to the Munitorium. New combat brigades are raised approximately once a year with a brigade consisting of ten regiments. After deployment these brigades attempt to stay together as a solid unit. Segmentum command typically complies as Singapore brigades tend to be well trained, disciplined, and well equipped. Having a full ten regiments used to working with one another and all equipped roughly to the same degree is beneficial in large scale operations. Singapore regiments are adept at fighting eldar and orks. They have been called forth occasionally to deal with Chaos incursions but these are rare in Segmentum Pacifica. Due to their units not typically traveling far the Singapore government attempts to repatriate their troops after their term of service has expired. Over 40% of troops that survive their service return to Singapore.

Singaporian guardsmen are equipped to Munitorium standards. Each guardsman is issued a lasgun, body armor, and a helmet. The helmet is the most distinctive part of a Singaporian regiment. It's a simiple shallow traingular cone twenty centimeters high and sixty in diameter.

Due to the Singaporian's devout nature the Commissariat has never felt the need to assign more than a single commissar to each Singaporian regiment.

1297th Overview:

In 975 M41 the 129th Brigade of the Singapore Longshoremen was raised consisting of the 1290th through 1299th Regiments. From 975 to 988 the Brigade moved as a unit primarily through the Indonis sub sector supporting the local PDF garrisons putting down small chaos uprisings. In late 988 the 1297th was split off from the rest of the brigade and sent to Tarnash to deal with a minor Eldar incursion. By 991 the eldar had been driven off but the rest of the 1297th's brigade had moved on. The 1297th did its best to try and catch up with the rest of the brigade but over the next 6 years was never able to rejoin the brigade. Argueably this was for the best as in 998 the remainder of the brigade was involved in halting an ork incursion on Sian and in the process suffered 83% casualties. The remainder of the brigade was condensed into two armor heavy regiments. The 1297th is now just another regiment in the Segmentum.

The 1297th is a typical Longshoremen regiment. They are a mechanized armor unit combining three mechanized infantry battalions with a tank battalion and artillery unit. This allows the regiment to function on its own without being forced to request help from other units. All standard infantry is equipped with Chimera transports and all storm troopers ride Valkyries. Each infantry platoons has heavy weapons attached, each infantry company has attached mortar support and each infantry battalion has a scout company attached. The armor battalion is a varied mixture of Leman Russ patterns with the majority being standard Leman Russes.

Like all Singaporian regiments the 1297th is mixed sex.

I've been pondering working up my own Imperial Guard regiment. The nice thing about WH40K IG regiments is that the sky's the limit. Aside from a few details like the lasgun anything goes just about. Heck, some feral worlds just send guys with axes out to be their regiments.

So anyways, the usual themes, Cadian, Tallaran, Death Korps, Catachan, etc. don't really interest me. In fact I couldn't really hit on anything that interested me. Then for some reason the name of a rather obscure CBT regiment popped into my head, the Singapore Longshoremen. Boom. Anyways with a good starting point I'm going to start trying to develop the idea into a fluffed out regiment. Comments welcome.

Singapore Longshoremen
Good to know that they have unions down there by the 41st century.

Got the basics of their world down. I need to drag out my old physics book and recheck the gravitational pull figure though. That was purely OOMA.

Looks good. Are you planning to post details of the command elements?

Probably. Though the details on them aren't so important. Commander, Vox operator, etc.

Armor is done, and a lot simpler. So is Artillery and Air Defense

Armored Battalion:
1 Command Section of 2 Tanks and 2 Command Chimeras
3 Armored Companies

Armored Company:
1 Command Sections of 2 Tanks
4 Platoons

Armored Platoon:
6 Leman Russ Tanks

Support Battalion:
1 Command Platoons of 36 Men, 4 Command Chimeras, 2 Auspex Chimeras, 2 Command Salamanders
3 Artillery Companies
2 Air Defense Company

Artillery Company:
1 Command Squad of 12 Men with 1 Command Salamander and 1 Auspex Chimera
3 Basalisk Platoons
1 Manticore Platoon

Basalisk Platoon:
1 Command Squad of 4 Men in 1 Command Salamander
6 Basilisks (Hades Pattern)
6 Trojans

Manticore Platoon:
1 Command Squad of 4 Men in 1 Command Salamander
8 Manticores
4 Trojans

Air Defense Company:
1 Command Squad of 8 Men with 1 Command Salamander and 1 Auspex Chimera
12 Hydra Air Defense Tanks

I'm not sure if I even want to detail the non-combat Battalion. Since it's made up of cooks, engineseers, and supply officers it's kind of amorphous.

For a while I was thinking I'd drop the Cavalry. I don't care for Rough Riders in general there's just something... off about the whole thing. And none of the options, motor cycles, horses, etc. really fit well with the theme of this army.

Then it hit me, air cav. I wanted to have some Valkyrie born troops in this army so there we go. Then I started to think about where I'd put the storm troopers... well why not make the Air Cav the army's storm troopers? There we go.

Updated Support Battalion List:

Support Battalion:
1 Command Platoons of 36 Men, 4 Command Chimeras, 2 Auspex Chimeras, 2 Command Salamanders
3 Artillery Companies
2 Air Defense Companies
2 Air Cavalry Companies

1 Command Squad of 12 Men with 1 Command Salamander and 1 Auspex Chimera
3 Basalisk Platoons
1 Manticore Platoon

1 Command Squad of 4 Men in 1 Command Salamander
6 Basilisks (Hades Pattern)
6 Trojans

Manticore Platoon:
1 Command Squad of 4 Men in 1 Command Salamander
8 Manticores
4 Trojans

Air Defense Company:
1 Command Squad of 8 Men with 1 Command Salamander and 1 Auspex Chimera
12 Hydra Air Defense Tanks

Air Cavalry Company:
1 Command Squad of 12 men in 2 Valkyries
4 Air Cavalry Platoons
8 Vendetta Gunships

Air Cavalry Platoon:
1 Commmand Squad of 6 Men
6 Stormtrooper Squads in 6 Valkyries

1 Command Seargent (Hellgun)

Ok, finalized TO&E for the Longshoremen is up. The support battalion isn't terribly fleshed out, mostly because it's cooks and such. I got the important parts in though.
