Markus von Hollendorf is the second son of a family of minor nobility from the town now known as Hollendorf, but formerly called Vertsreich. While he was away on a PDF reserve excercise, a seditious element took hold of the town and proved dug-in enough to be unable to eliminate through conventional means. Taking his PDF unit away from its excercise, he rolled into the town and, likewise being unable to turn out the rebels, burned or razed a good portion of the town. The rebels were routed, and Markus gave most of his own personal fortune towards the town's rebuilding efforts It was at this point that Markus was given his position in the Death Korps, being recognized for his ruthless determination and ability to make the hard decisions. It was here, too, that he acquired his appreciation for flame weapons.

The difficult choice he made in destroying his ancestral lands has left Markus rather distant and callous, making his orders clear in as few words as possible and expecting them to be followed promptly. However, hidden in this persona is also a deep convern for the men under his command and in his units; the destruction of Vertsreich/Hollendorf left him with a strong sense of penitence and loyalty towards the people he considers his own. Long nights of agonizing over the painful, yet necessary, action he took have also left him with the quirk of quivering fingers while at rest.
