Why do the bussard scoops spin on the old connie?

Post by LaughingCheese »

Is there any rhyme or reason to it?

Or, to quote Stargate: "Because spinning is sooo much cooler than not spinning!" :P

I think you have your answer. Because they're not just gas collectors - they're gas collectors... OF THE FUTURE!

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. The designers thought it looked cool.
I suppose you could come up with a technical in-universe explaination about how the spinning motion actualy transfers the collected stuff into the ship itself.

Yeah, rule of cool. And since it was the 60's, ...OF THE FUTURE!!!!! also counts. Heck, that's 99% of TOS.

Computers... OF THE FUTURE!

Red-blooded American males... OF THE FUTURE!

And so on, and so forth.

Maybe it was for hypnotizing enemy Commanders.

"And when I click my fingers, you will drop you shields and think you are a duck"
"You ain't gonna get off down the trail a mile or two, and go missing your wife or something, like our last cook done, are you?"
"My wife is in hell, where I sent her. She could make good biscuits, but her behavior was terrible."

I got it! These aren't spinning bussard collectors but in fact rotary fans for cooling down the heat generated and discussed in this thread!

Well, this was the '60's; maybe Trek was simply quicker to catch on to Disco than others. :spinny:

So the precursor to the E-D's Ten Forward was a disco? Fascinating.

Judging by "The Way to Eden," I'd say more like a coffeehouse.

Why do you having me thinking of friggin' space hippies less than an hour before bedtime?
They say that in the Army,
the women are mighty fine.
They look like Phyllis Diller,
and walk like Frankenstein.
