Re: I Hate Enterprise

You know, as a person that never really studied Trek, other than visiting this very website, I have to say I actually LIKED Enterprise as a series. I can forgive SOME of the continuity errors as being caused by the difficulty of creating a prequel to a TV series that originally aired in 1966. I mean...

Re: The NX-01... or my version thereof

I can't say I disliked Enterprise as a series.

But that series was simply not Trek. It just wasn't, and very little could have been done to make it Trek, from how they started it.

Re: Ground combat in Trek (2370s-2380s era)

The 5.56mm in use when the original M16 was designed would tumble. Nowadays, the 5.56mm ammunition issued will only tumble out of a short barreled weapon, such as an M4 carbine, and even then, not with any particular consistency. The round will fail to tumble at all when fired from a long barreled M...

Re: Ground combat in Trek (2370s-2380s era)

Modern body armor is replaced if it has ever been struck by a bullet. Any strike by a bullet to body armor damages the armor. The damage cannot be repaired, and the protective quality of the armor can no longer be ascertained. Trauma plates, to stop high power rifle rounds, are actually made of cera...

Re: Ground combat in Trek (2370s-2380s era)

If anyone here can tell me the weight of a tractor beam unit, and the weight of an inertial dampener device, I'd be very happy to know. Until then, I'm going to assume that they don't make the weapon prohibitively heavy. You can assume otherwise if you like. This weapon would have two moving parts, ...

Re: Ground combat in Trek (2370s-2380s era)

Both the Katana AND the Ushaan Tor are just primarily symbols of honor. They're made to be functional, but it's not very likely they'll actually see use in a real battle. The limitations of ablative armor aren't anything that modern body armors don't share. The composite body armor that is issued to...

Re: Ground combat in Trek (2370s-2380s era)

Velocity. Even in Trek, the chemical propulsion doesn't produce muzzle velocities beyond what we see in current-day weapons. Odo even described the wound as being the same as in his 20th century crime novels in that episode. Also, modern day weapons are incredibly complex. Moving parts, chamber pres...

Re: Ground combat in Trek (2370s-2380s era)

I found my write-up on my concepts for Federation ground combat. It turns out I had saved it as a text file after all. UFP-FMC United Federation of Planets Federation Marine Corps 1MOF 1st Marine Operational Force Camp Ermey, Kansas, Earth SBMU-73811 ShipBorne Marine Unit, attached to NX-73811 Sover...

Re: Ground combat in Trek (2370s-2380s era)

Well, on the 'walkers are invincible' note, I picture the Cardassian walkers would be downright fragile. They'd have shields, just like shuttles do, but compared to ground combat vehicles of other empires, it's just more of the same trend. The walker would be to a Federation 'tank' as the Keldon is ...

Re: Hand weapons

The problem with the bullpup layout is that it is extremely difficult to use a drum magazine with most designs, although when it comes to performance and size, I'd have to agree that a bullpup is superior. But just to play devil's advocate, there are some shortcomings. None of them are really insurm...

Re: Ground combat in Trek (2370s-2380s era)

Well, shuttles in the late 2370s have microtorpedoes and everything. They could fit the role of a close air support aircraft. But there's been enough episodes where shuttles were considered not to be an option that I thought someone would have experimented with an alternative. Again, the Cardassian ...

Re: Ground combat in Trek (2370s-2380s era)

Well, I have to say I do agree that walking vehicles are impractical. That's why I thought they'd really fit the Cardassian Union. They seem to have a habit with impractical weapons (Dreadnought missile?), and I thought their design philosophies in terms of architecture lent themselves to walking ve...

Re: Hand weapons

Well, going by these designs it looks like they were designed for units that had much greater use for a rifle than for a machinegun. All battles are fought for IMPORTANT land. In the future, where transporting troops is much faster, and easier, armies don't typically meet out on open battlefields, b...

Re: Hand weapons

The MG being the center of infantry combat is a tactical notion that comes from the German army, in both WW2, and later on in NATO during the cold war, so this notion has spread widely. But it IS still just one form of tactical doctrine for infantry. You can also see this in the quality of equipment...

Ground combat in Trek (2370s-2380s era)

There's tons and tons of great starship designs on this forum, but I personally think that ground combat in Trek has been something that's practically unexplored. The closest thing to an exploration of the nature of ground combat is the non-canon Elite Force games, and even those are quite weak when...
