Re: SF Debris: The Doomsday Machine

I think we've got so used to redshirts being killed on TOS that we would no longer consider them important in any other way than being cannon fodder (or just emphasizing how 'dangerous' a situation is). But it would be fair to assume that Kirk does not feel so lightly about a member of his crew and ...

Re: Star Trek: New Voyages

Oh hell, I had just finished writing a looooong review of the first episode, but apparently I had been logged out and when I pressed 'post', everything I had written was gone (and I was asked to log in). Fuck that. Anyhow, in short, the first episode's ambitions are great, but for me it mostly fails...

Re: Borg insider

I do remember something of that sort being said by the Borg, but I can't recall where exactly. Though it makes perfect sense, seeing how the Borg were 'humanized' in their approach, that they would notice how humans are not their usual 'assimilation stuff'. I was looking through the ditl.org page an...

Re: Nominate the coolest ships in sci fi

Having the Stargate go global would of been a better arc than the Ori. Well more political at least. It would have gone better with the idea that humans were quickly becoming the Fifth race, but I am not so sure how well it would have fit with the series concept. The political intrigue did play a s...

Re: Nominate the coolest ships in sci fi

I agree with the fact that the budget for all that ship-building would have been enormous and difficult to cover up, but probably not impossible. However, the Tau'ri building faster-than-light spaceships is relatively easy to accept, seeing how they took alien technologies and had the help of the As...

Re: Nominate the coolest ships in sci fi

Personally I was very satisfied with how the Stargate world evolved. Going back from season 10 of SG-1 to the first episodes of season 1, I realised just how much everything had grown, solidified and expanded with the years. 'Atlantis' was in my opinion entertaining and strove for some realism. For ...

Re: Charting all of TNG, via IMDB

@McAvoy: I never looked at it that way, but it makes sense. After all, even though he lived a whole life in the span of a 25 minute dream, if I remember correctly (and upon waking up, he was very much aware of it all) still it was just a dream and I think his real self came back unaffected and ready...

Re: Charting all of TNG, via IMDB

The first season of TNG got off to a rocky start, but I enjoyed it just the same. I see that 'The Inner Light' got the highest IMDb mark - I personally also love that episode best in the series. I do agree with most of the high marks given. 'Shades of Gray' was however the most difficult episode to ...

Seconded.
I loved SG:Universe as well, although it was quite different in tone from the previous SG-1 and Atlantis series. I found the acting very convincing, very natural - however I think we are in a minority. Most reviews are rather negative...

Re: SF Debris: Wormhole X-treme!

I laughed my ass off at the episode when I saw it. It rewards die-hard fans of the series with so many in-jokes that I thought 'man, this show is awesome for being able to do this kind of episodes.' It's sequel of sorts, '200', is even better and bolder than 'Wormhole X-treme'. The short parody of S...

Re: Nominate the coolest ships in sci fi

Having read through this thread (and the list posted a few months back in the above post), I realised just how little of SF I've seen. Time was an issue there, I guess. I did see everything Star Trek and Stargate though, so my favorite ships come from these shows. Perhaps my all-time winner in Star ...

Re: Alternative Warp Scale

It looks like you have a similar issue between warp 90 and 100, as the TNG warp between 9 and 10. Both effectively climb to infinity. You have to take into account that the chart is logarithmic. Therefore, even if it looks like the increase in speed is slowing down, and then going up again, this is...

Re: Alternative Warp Scale

Stargate series though early in the series showed Trek speeds or lower (Teal'c once said Goa'uld ships went only ten times the speed of light) it started to become consistent with many ships have intergalactic speed to cross the Milky Way in days or even hours. Then they have the ones that can cros...

Alternative Warp Scale

I've been thinking a lot about the warp scale used in TNG and thought it could have been much better. The "speed=warp_factor^3" used for TOS is very straightforward and works well given the small speeds that Star Trek ships travel at. Actually the Sovereign's speed of warp 9.99 (on the TNG...

Re: If Soverigns could land...

Graham, what I did was use up several sources. Basically I looked for a shot of Central Park from the air, then I exported an image of the Galaxy from Sketch Up, using the same perspective, and because it did not amount to very much (as I said before, Central Park is very large and I was not expecti...
