Plotline

It is now six months after the events at the Binary Stars and Burnham has been in jail as Starfleet's only ever mutineer. She is informed that she is to be transfered to a new prison and placed on a shuttle. During the transfer an emergency develops and the shuttle is damaged and its pilot is lost. Just before the shuttle is destroyed they are rescued by the USS Discovery.

While on the ship Burnham is ordered to assist with a scientific project by the ship's mysterious Captain, Gabriel Lorca. She is sent to engineering and meets Lieutenant Paul Stamets, an astromycologist who is leading the project. She overhears him discussing an upcoming experiment with a colleague serving on the Discovery's sister ship USS Glenn. Some time later Lorca is informed of an incident aboard the Glenn, that has killed the entire crew. Stamets leads a boarding party to investigate and finds the dead crew hideously twisted and deformed. They also find a group of Klingons who appear to have been killed by an unknown creature. They soon discover the creature and barely escape with their lives.

Back onboard the Discovery, Lorca asks Burnham to remain and work on the ship, despite her conviction. Lorca admits that he organized the shuttle accident that brought her aboard so she could help develop the new spore-based propulsion system on Discovery. He believes this drive could be the only thing that would lead the Federation to winning the war with the Klingons.

Lorca also secretly has the creature from the Glenn transported onboard Discovery.

Analysis

OK, now we have another major issue with Discovery. The Spore Drive! In effect they are asking us to believe in a starship propulsion system based on magic mushrooms.
