Plotline

Captain Christopher Pike takes emergency command of Discovery. He explains that the Enterprise suffered catastrophic damage while investigating seven mysterious signals scattered across the galaxy. Six of the signals have since disappeared, and when Discovery arrives at the location of the seventh it too vanishes.

In the area, the crew discovers the wreckage of the USS Hiawatha on an asteroid composed of non-baryonic matter. The Hiawatha had been believed lost during the Klingon war. Inside they find chief engineer Jett Reno nursing the last of the survivors.

While helping them off the asteroid, commander Michael Burnham sees what she describes as a "red angel".

Burnham visits the Enterprise to search the quarters of her adoptive brother Spock, who is on a leave of absence from Starfleet. She discovers a file in Spock's personal log that describes nightmares of the seven signals that he has had since childhood.
