Plotline

Uhura is invited to a meal with other crew members in Pike's quarters, where she reveals she is not sure of remaining in Starfleet.

The Enterprise attempts to divert the course of a comet on course to kill the inhabitants of a desert planet, however, they find that it has a forcefield preventing their work. Uhura joins the team that beam down to the comet's surface and discover that it responds to music. A starship positions itself between the comet and the Enterprise. On board is a group of "Shepherds" who believe the comet is a being called M'hanit, an ancient arbiter of life. The crew of the Enterprise distract the Shepherds long enough to allow Spock to alter the comet's course. As the comet passes the planet it releases water vapour into the atmosphere improving the environment for the planet's inhabitants.

Uhura decodes the music from the comet which seems to indicate that it expected the interference. Pike ponders the origins of the comet and its effects.
