It took weapons fire to get that metal stuff off the hull through most of the episode. Why then does it all just fall off as soon as the ship gets clear of the cloud?

Connor Trineer puts in a superb performance as Trip/Sim in this episode.

This episode is a nominee for the DITL "Best of Trek" award.

Plotline

During a test of a new procedure on the warp engine Trip is badly injured. His only hope lies in a peculiar alien animal which can take on the form of any person whose DNA is injected into it - by cloning trip in this way, Phlox hopes to produce neural tissue for a transplant. But Archer struggles with the morality of creating a sentient being just to harvest organs from it - all the more so when Phlox discovers that the procedure will kill the clone.
