Notes

The Mutara Interdimensional Deep-space transponder Array is designed to allow Starfleet to communicate with Starships across very long ranges, i.e. those operating well beyond the Federation borders on deep space assignments. The array has most famously been used by the Pathfinder project to contact USS Voyager; the array was used to fire a 60 terawatt tachyon beam at a class-B itinerant pulsar, generating a microwormhole which allowed communications signals to propagate over distances in excess of thirty thousand lightyears. This gave Starfleet regular two way real time communications with the lost Starship for the first time. [2]

Comments

The MIDAS array was first seen in Voyager's "Pathfinder", and was used by Reg Barclay to contact the little lost Starfleet ship. We know virtually nothing about the array - we see images of it, but there is nothing in the shot to scale it against so the size is a total guess. The only thing we know for sure is that it can produce a tachyon beam with an output of more than sixty terawatts.
