Notes

The Suurok class starship was in use by the Vulcans in the mid to late 22nd century. It was a general purpose interstellar vessel, regarded as considerably more advanced than the best Human designs of the time. The ship was capable of a top speed of Warp 6.5, and was fitted with a tractor beam. [2]

The design was typical of several Vulcan vessel classes, with a large circular nacelle around a slender single hull. [2] This configuration is still in use today on the Vulcan Apollo class. [5] Although the cylindrical nacelle configuration would eventually prove to be the more successful, [6] the ring nacelle was considered much superior at the time, and is still viable today.

These ships had a long and successful service life before finally being retired between 2184 and 2194.

The Suurok class was seen in the Enterprise episode "Breaking the Ice", and is a Vulcan ship of the 2150s. The name is slightly speculative - Archer says it as "Su-rok", and I'm only guessing that he slightly mispronounced"Surak", the man who created the Vulcan philosophy of logic. (NOTE : Subsequently it's proved that the name is actually "Suurok". So much for my theory, I guess! Gotta love those Vulcan names, huh?)

The Suurok class is an interesting design, and unlike Enterprise itself one that the creators actually seem to have gotten right! The big "ring nacelle" with a hull on the axis is reminiscent of both the Vulcan Apollo class seen in the TNG era and the SS Enterprise seen in the TMP recreation deck scene. This establishes a common design ethic for Vulcan designed warp capable ships, although we do have to account for the warp shuttle seen in TMP and the vessel which landed to make contact with Humanity in "First Contact". The warp shuttle could be explained as a standard Federation design which the Vulcans were using in addition to their own ships. The First Contact ship is, in my opinion, unlikely to be a warp capable vessel at all but is rather a simple landing craft sent from a larger vessel in orbit.

The Suurok is stated to be capable of warp 6.5, which is almost 275 x c on the TOS scale. That makes it about 2.2 times as fast as Enterprise's warp 5, while still being almost half the speed of Kirk's Constitution class Enterprise of a century later. This fits reasonably with the idea that the ship is superior to Human technology while still lagging Federation tech.

No armament is mentioned in the episode, but the ship is likely to have some sort of weapons and I have given it phase cannons, torpedoes and a shield system. The ship does have a tractor beam which it uses in the episode to rescue one of Enterprise's shuttles.

The size of the Suurok is uncertain. Two window rows are visible on the hull, and if these represent two adjacent decks then the overall length is somewhere in the region of two hundred and twenty metres - but there is considerable leeway in this figure. The size comparison image is one of the few on this site that I created myself.

For the service dates, we have the Vulcan captain's statement that he has been captain of his vessel for fifteen years which proves that they entered service at least as early as 2136. I gave them a retirement date of 2194 so that they would have a service life of about fifty years, a nice round number.
