Notes

The first Warp 4 starships built by Humanity [2], the Franklin class were constructed in the 2140s. [3] They continued to serve through to the 2160s [2], despite the introduction of the NX class which were almost twice as fast and far larger. [4]

After the Romulan war, the Franklins were assigned to the fledgling Starfleet for long range explorer missions. Amongst them was the USS Franklin herself, which was placed under the command of Captain Balthazar M. Edison. A former Maco, Edison privately resented his new command and the Federation as a whole. His ship vanished in the Gagarin radiation belt during its mission, a mystery which would persist for over a century. [2]

It transpired that the Franklin had gone through a wormhole and crash-landed on the planet Altamid. There it lay dormant for decades, abandoned by Edison and the surviving crew. Eventually it was discovered by Jaylah, who made it her home on the planet. She restored what she could of the ship over the years in hopes of one day being able to launch it. Scotty and the Enterprise crew were able to assist her in this endeavour when they were stranded on the planet, and they subsequently flew the Franklin into space in an attempt to foil Edison's attack on Yorktown base. [2]

The Franklin penetrated Yorktown during the resulting battle, smashing the alien drone ships which had breached the station and destroying them. She crashed once more in the process. [2]
