On the last day of the year Shannon O'Donnell, an ancestor of Captain Janeway and one of the first female astronauts, convinces the last remaining resident of Portage Creek, Indiana, to sell his home in order to make way for construction of the Millennium Gate. The Gate will become one of Earth's largest buildings, a kilometre high and 3.2 kilometres wide at the base.1
