The first Captain of the USS Excelsior, Styles was an arrogant and overconfident man who was not popular with his captain of engineering, Commander Scott. Styles attempted to pursue the USS Enterprise from Spacedock when it was stolen by Admiral Kirk; thanks to some sabotage by Scotty the Excelsior was unable to persue.1 Styles was replaced by Captain Sulu some time after the incident.2
