A gifted scientist, Dr. Marcus was involved in a romantic relationship with Captain Kirk which resulted in a son, David. Carol was reluctant to allow Kirk any contact with David because of the nature of his life as a Starfleet officer. Kirk agreed to stay away from the boy during his childhood, and Marcus never revealed the identity of his father to David whilst he was growing up. Carol and Kirk were thrown together by fate when Khan Singh attacked the Genesis project where she was working.1
