One of those who was trapped in the subspace anomaly discovered by Voyager in 2377, Valen favoured surviving by attacking other ships and stealing resources from them. He was opposed to the alliance created by Janeway, but nevertheless created an alliance of his own aimed at attacking them. The attempt failed.1
