Boone was an old friend of Chief O'Brien, though the two had not seen one another for years until they met on Deep Space Nine in 2370. Unknown to O'Brien, Boone was actually working for the Maquis and had engineered the meeting as part of a plot to smuggle weapons. Even more surprising, it transpired that Boone was actually a Cardassian agent who had been modified to imitate the original when he was captured at Setlik III.1
