Captain of a Tamarian vessel, Dathan was determined to make peaceful contact with the Federation despite the formidable language differences. To this end he marooned himself and Captain Picard on El Adrel, hoping that they would have to work together to defeat the creature living there and so come to a greater understanding. The ploy worked, though Dathan was killed in the attempt.1
