Okona was owner and captain of the merchant vessel Erstwhile. A free spirit, he liked to live his life with few ties and entanglements. He acted as a go-between for Yanar and Benzan, lovers from the planets Straleb and Altec respectively. When Yanar became pregnant Benzan asked Okona to take a jewel to her as a wedding proposal; unfortunately Okona was blamed for both the pregnancy and for stealing the jewel by the planet's rulers. Captain Picard was able to resolve the problem successfully.1
