Nagilum was something of a mystery; an alien lifeform, possibly non-corporeal, he dwelled within a large 'hole in space' in which the Enterprise-D became trapped in 2365. Nagilum had an ability to manipulate matter and space in unusual ways, and used this to study the reaction of the ship's crew under stress. He planned to kill up to one half of the Enterprise-D crew to study death, but desisted when Captain Picard threatened to destroy the ship.1
