A member of the Refit Enterprise crew, Chief Ross was present aboard the ship in 2271 when it responded to the V'Ger threat. She was in engineering when Kirk ordered Scotty to prepare to implement Starfleet Order 2005 - a self destruct order which Kirk hoped would destroy V'Ger. Ross questioned whether the explosion would be big enough to destroy the gigantic machine, and was assured by Scotty that it would indeed.1
